We all know too well how sitting in front of a computer or laptop all day and into the night if you are a busy business owner or entrepreneur can have an effect on your health, not to mention damage relationships.
I know myself from previously working for a corporate company how it was all too easy to just peep at emails on weekends or after we leave work to check if anything important had come in.

Gmail and Google Calendar have become the key tool for many Virtual Assistants and their clients because of its versatility. Some people still use Outlook, which I did for many years but I really think Gmail is the way to go, especially for Virtual Assistants working remotely for clients, because it gives you the ability, no matter what device you are using, to access, reply to and have sent items synced together instantly. This can be done whether on a PC, iMac, iPad, iPhone wherever you are in the world! It's great if the client is travelling constantly and needs to access from their usual devices.
There are also a couple of options to allow a Virtual Assistant access to your email.
1. Sharing your username and password. If you want to keep your password a secret there is a password protector service which I use called Passpack.
2. Once Gmail has been set up there is a section under account settings to 'Grant access to your account' The Virtual Assistant will then be able to read and respond to your emails.
Similarly, the same can be done with the Google Calendar so a Virtual Assistant can add events and appointments, and send out reminders on behalf of the client.
Giving a Virtual Assistant access to your Email and Calendar can be more help than you know, as they can set up things like automatic filtering, utilise labels within Gmail and generally do any email cleansing. You will never have a cluttered inbox or miss an important meeting again!

Generally self employed, they provide professional administrative, technical or creative assistance to clients remotely from a home office.
What can you outsource to a VA?
Anything an assistant or secretary does in an office basically, from email and calendar management to bookkeeping, online research, presentations, travel planning to helping with their social media presence.
